The Brilliant Club
The Brilliant Club is an award-winning university access charity that works with schools and universities across the UK. It is a national organisation that helps to encourage children to progress to highly-selective universities.
We have recently selected four Year 9 and five Year 10 students to take part in The Scholars Programme, which is an academic programme run by The Brilliant Club. The Scholars Programme aims to give children an experience of university learning to help them make an informed decision about their future.
Throughout The Scholars Programme students will experience small group university-style tutorials delivered by a PhD tutor, teaching a supra-curricular topic based on their current research. Although university may not be for everyone, these students have been identified as having the potential to make a successful application to one of the UK’s most selective universities in the future.
Students have to attend a number of tutorials with a PhD student and complete an assignment to a level higher than their current key stage and the work is awarded grades in line with university marking (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third and then a pass).
Last year six students in Year 9 completed the course and the work they produced was to an A level quality. They all successfully passed their assessments and join only 12 other members of The Brilliant Club at Kingswood Secondary Academy.
Congratulations to Maja and Blossom who were awarded a 2:1 and Weronika, Mia, Sarah and Olivia who achieved a 2:2.
This is an amazing achievement considering the restrictions that have been imposed with social distancing and Lockdown. Well done girls. (Feb 2021).
