Deputy Head of Year

We have six Deputy Heads of Year at Kingswood (see table above).

What is a Deputy Head of Year?

Deputy Heads of Year work with pupils to help them address barriers to learning. They bridge academic and pastoral support roles with the aim of ensuring that individual pupils engage more effectively in learning appropriately. Pupils of all ability levels can achieve, and Deputy Heads of Year target these pupils and help them identify and address what it is that gets in the way of their learning. These barriers can be wide ranging and often very personal to the individual pupil.

What is the purpose of Deputy Heads of Year?

The purpose of Deputy Heads of Year is to assist with:

  • Social, emotional and behavioural problems
  • Pupils experiencing organisational difficulties
  • Pupils who need support with study skills/coursework
  • Planning/revision/examination techniques

What do Deputy Heads of Year actually do?

The primary focus of Deputy Heads of Year :

  • Developing coping strategies
  • Small group work
  • Raising aspirations
  • Enhancing motivation
  • Encouraging re-engagement in learning

Deputy Heads of Year  will take into account the range of complex underlying issues that may impact negatively on learning and achievement.  For example:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Mental/Health issues
  • Relationship difficulties

  • Family issues/concerns

Attendance Officer - Responsible for Year 9 boys and Years 10 and 11

The Prospects (previously Connexions) team at Kingswood work closely with pupils during various sessions, particularly with Year 11 to guide them through choosing the right career path.  For more information click here.
